The history of "Brunello di Montalcino" is linked to that of Biondi Santi. In the mid-1800s Ferruccio planted the first Brunello vineyard, obtained from a Sangiovese clone. The first mention of a dry red dates back to 1869 when his grandfather Clemente won 2 medals for his Brunello at an agricultural fair. Ferruccio was a Garibaldian and then an intelligent winemaker and so over the decades the fame of Brunello Biondi Santi in Italy and in the world has been the driving force behind many other good producers. A case of Brunello 1955 was donated in 1969 by President Saragat to Queen Elizabeth II on the occasion of a gala dinner.
